Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups (260g) whole wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 2 tablespoons (25g) packed light or dark brown sugar
- 1 and 3/4 cups (420g/ml) buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your waffle maker on medium-high heat and the oven to 200°F (93°C). Place a wire rack on a baking sheet and set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Set this mixture aside.
- In a separate large bowl, combine the melted butter, eggs, and brown sugar. Add buttermilk and vanilla, whisking until all ingredients are well mixed. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix gently. It's okay to have small lumps.
- Grease the preheated waffle maker with nonstick spray. Pour about 1/3 cup of batter into each waffle maker well, adjusting as necessary for size. Cook the waffles until crisp, around 4–5 minutes, following your waffle maker’s instructions. Transfer the cooked waffles to the wire rack and keep warm in the oven. Repeat with the remaining batter.
- Serve the waffles hot, topped with your favorite choices.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg to the batter.
These waffles freeze well; simply reheat them in a toaster or oven when needed.
Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less brown sugar based on your taste preference.
