Description

These apple turnovers are a delightful dessert made with flaky puff pastry and sweet apple filling. Perfect for a quick treat or a cozy dessert, they’re easy to make and irresistible, featuring apples, brown sugar, and a delicious glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (2 sheets) puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 3 medium apples (peeled, cored & diced)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 egg + 1 tbsp water
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Thaw the puff pastry according to package instructions while preparing the apple filling.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples and cook until softened, stirring occasionally.
  3. Lower the heat and mix in the brown sugar and cinnamon.
  4. Simmer for 3 minutes until the apples are soft and caramelized, then remove from heat and let cool.
  5. Flour the counter lightly and roll the first sheet of thawed puff pastry into an 11" square. Cut into 4 equal squares.
  6. Place the cooled apple mixture over one half of each square, leaving a 1/2" border around the edges.
  7. Whisk the egg and water to create an egg wash, and brush it on the edges of the pastry squares to seal them. Crimp the edges with a fork to secure.
  8. Repeat the process with the second sheet of puff pastry.
  9. Arrange the turnovers on a parchment-lined baking sheet, ensuring they are spaced 1" apart. Cut 2-3 small slits in the tops to allow steam to escape during baking.
  10. Brush the tops with the egg wash and bake for 20-22 minutes or until golden brown and puffed up.
  11. For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Drizzle over the warm turnovers.

Notes

For a touch of extra flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the apple filling.
Make sure to let the turnovers cool slightly before adding the glaze to prevent it from melting away.
