Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 teaspoon neutral oil
- 4 large eggs
- 4 large egg yolks
- 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 and 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 and 1/2 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup (113ml) milk
- 1/2 cup (113ml) heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon (14ml) vanilla extract
- 10 slices stale bread sliced about 3/4-inch thick
Instructions
- Melt the butter and neutral oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, egg yolks, cinnamon, nutmeg, and both sugars until well blended. Add milk, heavy cream, and vanilla, and whisk until combined.
- Dip bread slices in the egg mixture, allowing each side to soak for about 2 minutes.
- Place the soaked bread in the skillet and cook until golden brown on one side, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until browned on the other side. Add more butter as needed for additional batches.
- Serve warm with maple syrup and fresh berries.
Notes
For best results, use stale bread to absorb the egg mixture without falling apart.
Adjust the spices to your liking, adding more cinnamon or nutmeg if desired.
Top with powdered sugar or whipped cream for an extra treat!
